FMP Process

About the FMP Program
Download the FMP Brochure

The FMP designation requires six (6) credits and can be completed in approximately 12 months. Credits are earned through the completion of approved courses in the following
areas:

Training for the FMP will be available through IFMA and approved providers (partner associations, community colleges, training companies) and a variety of learning formats (conferences, chapters, councils, on-site seminars, online courses and IFMA Recognized Programs).

FMP candidates may customize and integrate their training to build the specific knowledge they need to meet individual goals. The FM Business Workshop is the only required IFMA course.

Advanced Placement
Professionals and students who have completed coursework through an IFMA-approved provider or an IFMA Recognized Program prior to applying for the FMP may seek advanced placement in Areas 1-4. The courses must have been taken through an IFMA-approved provider or IFMA Recognized Program, and documentation of completion must be submitted during the application process. (An additional fee will not be assessed for IFMA Recognized Program coursework.)

"I feel very good about receiving the Facility Management Professional designation. The IFMA staff did a wonderful job of providing all the information necessary to complete the coursework. I was able to submit documentation of college facility courses and outside management training seminars that I had taken over the years to the IFMA Review Team which helped to expedite the process. This was a rewarding experience and I believe that having my FMP will assist with future opportunities working in the facility management arena."

Peggy J. Dabels, FMP
ACE American Insurance Company

Completion of Courses and Assessment
All courses submitted to IFMA must show that an assessment has been completed. If you have taken courses in 2004 that would count toward advanced placement in the FMP, you must complete the assessment for the course prior to sending your final application to IFMA. Assessment will be offered online and following courses completion at all IFMA organized functions.

Recertification
FMP designees will be required to recertify every two years. Recertification criteria will be defined under the following areas:

  • networking
  • business/workplace leadership
  • participation in research activities through IFMA Headquarters
  • continuing education
  • career growth
  • involvement in committees in the workplace.

The cost of recertification is $100.
